# Linked loads from Steel Column to Steel Column

Why Steel Column requires manual entry of other column loads.

## Why doesn't Steel Column allow Linked Loads from other Steel Column calculations?

Steel column shafts are very commonly connected to other steel column shafts with moment-transferring connections. The proper analysis of a continuous multi-span member requires the analysis of all spans together (think "moment distribution"). While load linking would allow the transfer of loads from one calculation to another, it would not allow the analysis to consider those loads simultaneously and allow the connected steel columns to distribute the moment on the basis of stiffness.

Rather than risk giving the impression that these effects have been accounted for when they have not, the Steel Column module currently does not support load linking between column calculations. This allows the engineer to determine the appropriate loading based on the framing conditions and detailing of the structure.

We understand that automatic load transfer from Steel Column to Steel Column would be a useful workflow improvement, and it is something we may revisit in the future if we can implement it in a way that accurately reflects the underlying engineering assumptions.
